Ederson is edging closer to a switch to Old Trafford and could become Michael Carrick's first acquisition. United are in talks over a £38million deal for the Atalanta midfielder, who is entering the final year of his contract.

The 26-year-old was an unused substitute in the Italian side's final match of the campaign, with his manager revealing that Ederson was on the verge of departing the club. However, while he would strengthen United's midfield, he is not regarded as the direct successor to Casemiro.

Instead, the Brazilian would vie with Kobbie Mainoo for a place in the team and also offer cover in defensive midfield. It has been widely reported that United are considering several Premier League stars to fill the Casemiro-shaped void in Carrick's side next season.

Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson would be an ideal fit, while also bringing additional dynamism at the base of midfield. Manchester City are believed to be frontrunners for his signature but United will hope to beat their rivals in a blockbuster transfer battle.
