Manchester United are preparing for a pivotal transfer window under new boss Michael Carrick

Manchester United are poised to overhaul their squad in the summer transfer window. Michael Carrick's side have clinched a Champions League spot but the manager will recognise that reinforcements are needed to help his team realise their ultimate ambitions.

The 44-year-old has penned a two-year contract as United boss following his impressive interim stint. After the Premier League campaign concluded on Sunday, his focus will now shift to the transfer window.

Signing midfielders and beyond is the club's top priority after Casemiro confirmed his intention to depart at the end of his contract. The Brazilian captain was pivotal under Carrick, enjoying his finest goalscoring campaign, and finding his successor will be essential.

United could also be searching for a left winger as they look to strengthen their attacking options. Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes delivered another outstanding season but the club can start preparing for his eventual exit. Here, Mirror Football examines how United's attack might shape up after an ideal transfer window.

Ederson is edging closer to a switch to Old Trafford and could become Michael Carrick's first acquisition. United are in talks over a £38million deal for the Atalanta midfielder, who is entering the final year of his contract.

The 26-year-old was an unused substitute in the Italian side's final match of the campaign, with his manager revealing that Ederson was on the verge of departing the club. However, while he would strengthen United's midfield, he is not regarded as the direct successor to Casemiro.

Instead, the Brazilian would vie with Kobbie Mainoo for a place in the team and also offer cover in defensive midfield. It has been widely reported that United are considering several Premier League stars to fill the Casemiro-shaped void in Carrick's side next season.

Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson would be an ideal fit, while also bringing additional dynamism at the base of midfield. Manchester City are believed to be frontrunners for his signature but United will hope to beat their rivals in a blockbuster transfer battle.

Confirmation of long-serving City manager Pep Guardiola's exit may aid United's pursuit as the club confront the end of an era, prompting Anderson to weigh up his options. United's new midfield duo will be charged with providing support and protection for Bruno Fernandes in the No.10 position.

The skipper is only improving ahead of his eighth Premier League season at Old Trafford. However, United cannot remain heavily dependent on the 31-year-old and need more options if they aspire to compete on multiple fronts and challenge for the sport's biggest honours.

The marquee signing of Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers could address two crucial areas of United's attack. The 23-year-old has been integral to Unai Emery's side, but Villa may look to cash in on their prized asset to fund a squad overhaul. He could cost around £90m, with reports claiming he is worth between £80m and £100m.

United are in the market for a new left winger and the England international could thrive out wide for Carrick's side, leapfrogging Matheus Cunha in the pecking order. Rogers would also serve as a ready-made replacement for Fernandes in attacking midfield when the time comes, allowing his successor to settle into life at Old Trafford.

On the opposite flank, there will be fierce competition for a starting berth. Bryan Mbeumo and Amad will battle it out for position throughout the campaign, with that rivalry pushing both players to deliver their finest performances.

Up front, Benjamin Sesko will emerge as the focal point of United's attack after impressing Carrick. The 22-year-old has already shown his worth under the new United boss and is primed for a standout campaign next season.

United's dream attack: Anderson, Mainoo; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rogers; Sesko.
