Roy Keane's verdict on Man Utd transfer targets as club face harsh reality

Manchester United are in the market for a new midfielder this summer to replace Casemiro, and Roy Keane has given his verdict on the potential transfer targets available

Roy Keane has suggested that Manchester United will find it difficult to find a better midfielder than Bruno Fernandes as they look to strengthen their engine room this summer. The board are already likely to be laying the groundwork to identify a suitable successor for Casemiro, who will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.

However, that won't be a straightforward task given the vast experience and quality that the Brazilian brings. Casemiro has been pivotal to United's achievements this season as Michael Carrick attempts to steer his club towards Champions League qualification for 2026/27.

The 34-year-old has missed just two Premier League fixtures this season as the Reds approach their final six matches, boasting eight goals and two assists to his name - remarkable for a predominantly defensively-minded midfielder. As a result of his looming departure, a host of names have been touted as potential heirs to fill the gap he will inevitably leave.

But if Keane's recent verdict on talent in the English top flight is anything to go by, they may struggle to find anyone of equal quality to his current midfield partner in Fernandes. The Sky Sports pundit took part in a rapid-fire winner stays on segment with The Overlap, where he was quizzed on his thoughts regarding the Premier League's current crop of midfielders.

In his assessment, Keane rated Mateus Fernandes higher than Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Casemiro, Enzo Fernandez and Ryan Gravenberch. However, he conceded that Bernardo Silva is a superior all-round player to the West Ham talent.

He shared the same view of Silva when asked to choose between the Manchester City star and Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice, though found himself at a crossroads when his former club's current skipper entered the equation. He said: "Do I have to answer it?

"They're both brilliant players. Obviously Silva's in a better team, Bruno's doing well in not such a good United team. At this moment in time, form-wise, I'd go Silva."

When asked whether he feels Bruno stands a chance of claiming Premier League Player of the Season honours, Keane added: "I think it depends how the season finishes. Who gets their hands on the big prize at the end, who wins that league would have a big say in it.

"I think Rice has been kind of quiet lately, but obviously over the course of the season...Bruno's stats are brilliant. They're all in the mix."

It comes as United boast a wealth of targets to chase this summer, extending well beyond the majority of names Keane mentioned during his segment.

Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton has been mooted as a potential addition to the Theatre of Dreams, as have both Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United - given that they appear unlikely to clinch European football for the upcoming season.

Newcastle's Lewis Miley has also now been linked, though the 19 year old may need further time to develop consistently at such an early point in his career.

Benfica's Richard Rios has also been thrown into the mix with reports suggesting that United have contacted his representatives, while Sunderland's Noah Sadiki is also believed to be a long-term target following an impressive debut season in the Premier League.

Add to that ever-growing list the likes of Eduardo Camavinga, Morten Hjulmand, Kees Smit, Aleksandar Pavlovich and many more, and United have no shortage of avenues to explore in the months ahead.
